What to Expect During Your First Psychiatric Evaluation
Taking the first step toward mental health care can feel uncertain. At Elevate Mental Wellness, our goal is to make that first experience comfortable, transparent, and supportive—so you always know what to expect.
Before the Visit
Once your appointment is scheduled, you’ll receive secure intake forms to complete through our online portal. These include background questions about your medical history, symptoms, and any past treatment or medications. Filling these out ahead of time helps your provider understand your needs before you even walk through the door or log in for your telehealth visit. If you’re using insurance, our care coordination team will verify your coverage and help you understand what to bring. Most clients find that having a list of their current medications, any recent lab results, and key medical history makes the first visit smoother. If you don’t have those records available, that’s completely fine; we look forward to starting your mental health journey with you and gathering that information together over time.
During the Evaluation
Your first appointment typically lasts between 45 and 60 minutes. It’s a conversation, not a test. You’ll meet with one of our psychiatric nurse practitioners, who will guide you through a discussion about your mental health history, current challenges, goals, and daily routines. This is also your opportunity to ask questions. Many clients ask about diagnosis, treatment options, and what medications or therapies might be right for them. We value collaboration. Your input shapes your care plan. At Elevate, we approach every evaluation with compassion and curiosity. We want to understand you, not just your symptoms.
After the Appointment
Following your evaluation, your provider will share initial impressions and discuss next steps. This may include starting medication, scheduling therapy, or ordering lab work if needed. You’ll also receive access to your treatment plan and visit summary through our secure portal. Most clients have a follow-up appointment within 2–4 weeks to review progress and make adjustments if necessary. Our care coordination team remains available between visits to help with medication questions, refills, or scheduling support.
The Goal
A psychiatric evaluation is the foundation of your care - a starting point for understanding your unique needs and developing a plan that fits your life.
“You don’t have to have everything figured out before you start. We don’t rush the process. Healing unfolds when you feel safe, supported, and seen for who you are, not just what you’re going through.” - Dr. Shannon Lansford, DNP, PMHNP-BC
Our mission at Elevate Mental Wellness is to help you feel seen, supported, and empowered every step of the way.
